A major demonstration is expected in the historic centre of Quito on 9 October. There have been extensive protests throughout Ecuador since 3 October following the announcement of new austerity measures on 1 October which include rises in fuel prices. A State of Emergency was declared on 3 October and remains in place. Military forces have been deployed nationwide, and security forces have used tear gas to disperse crowds. Further large-scale demonstrations are expected over the next few days, especially in the Andean region. The President has moved the seat of government from the capital to Guayaquil.
Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations, as some have turned violent. Passengers are urged to avoid travelling around within the country at present.
